Hurricanes preparing for big weekend in Halifax

September 27, 2018

It will be an extremely important weekend for the soccer Hurricanes as the men and women travel to Halifax to take on the MSVU Mystics and UKC Blue Devils.

On Saturday, versus the Mystics, the Hurricanes women look to pass MSVU in the standings with a victory; the ‘Canes enter Saturday’s game in third place with a record of 4-2-0 (12 pts) while MSVU is 4-1-1 (13 pts). The Mystics took the victory in the only meeting so far this season between the two teams by a score of 4-1 on September 15 in Cornwall.

‘Canes center midfielder from Stellarton, NS, T-Anna Fraser, looks forward to the challenge this weekend.  She’s scored a goal and an assist in the first six games of the regular season.

“Our team has been working hard in training and focusing ahead of the weekend. We’re excited to put what we’ve been working on in training into the games this weekend and hopefully come out with things in our favour”.

The action will continue on Sunday when the women’s Hurricanes take on the 1-3-1, fifth place, UKC Blue Devils.  The ‘Canes lead the season series with UKC 1-0 after a 4-3 victory on September 16 in Cornwall.

Hurricanes women’s head coach, Kris McKinnon, knows this weekend is an important one.

“The team is looking to rebound after a setback last weekend.  We know it will be a tough weekend as we battle two perennial playoff teams in the ACAA. We know we have to be at our best both days and have focused on that this week in training,” he said.

The men’s Hurricanes are coming off of two games in which they struggled last weekend, earning a draw before losing to the STU Tommies on Sunday.

Head coach Jonathan Vos is looking to rebound with two solid performances this weekend in Halifax.

“We’re looking to rebound after a difficult weekend. An objective for us is to create more quality chances.  We need our players forward and putting the pressure on the opposition,” he said.

Saturday the first-place Hurricanes (4-1-1) will challenge the 3-1-2, Mystics (second place) before playing the third place UKC Blue Devils (3-1-1) on Sunday.

Second year right back from Kingston, NS, Connor Keith, knows his team has to be better this weekend.

“I think this weekend is going to be huge for us after last weekend’s results. As a team we know what we are capable of and we need to translate what we are practicing during the week to the games this weekend,” he shared.

Saturday’s games take place at 2pm with the men and women playing simultaneously on neighboring fields, while Sundays games take place at 1 and 3pm (w/m).
